Big Delights in the “big Apple”: What New York City Has to Offer you

Big Delights in the “big Apple”: What New York City Has to Offer you

New York City, located among a cluster of islands surrounding New York Harbour, has an immense amount to offer visitors. That said, many first-timers in the city often feel overwhelmed by its size and multitude of attractions. But rest assured that by keeping a few handy travel tips in mind, you’ll be able to get the most out of your experience in the “Big Apple.”

New York City, like many large cities, has a number of small, distinctive boroughs. Atmospheric neighbourhoods such as Greenwich Village, SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown emanate the splendours of the city, yet stand on their own characteristically. Even relatively compact regions of the city are known for their unique attributes, such as the farmer’s market in Union Square or the iconic lighted advertisements of Times Square. But one thing is certain: no matter where in the city you go, you’re bound to encounter a host of treasures.

When organizing an outing in New York City, it’s a good idea to arrange an approximate sightseeing route; after all, with a city that’s so vast in size, sticking to some sort of plan might save time and help you get the most out of your visit. Getting around New York City is simple: the city’s subway network is one of the most comprehensive in the world, connecting all parts of Manhattan in rapid time.

However, the best way to see New York is undoubtedly on foot. Central Park is an ideal place to start a walking tour of New York City: 843 acres of shimmering ponds and lush greenery beckon to locals and tourists alike as a haven alongside the concrete backdrop of the city. And apart from offering breathtaking scenery, the park is a centre for New York recreation. Visitors can listen to music groups, watch performers, walk along the trails and even take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride. The Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, Ellis Island and Coney Island also offer great opportunities for outdoor family fun in New York City.

If you’re an art buff, you’ll certainly want to take advantage of New York City’s many museums and galleries. A section of Fifth Avenue has now been officially deemed the “Museum Mile” due to the number of famous museums located there. Among the most famous are: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Moreover, a trip to New York City simply isn’t complete without a visit to its famous Theatre District. With world-class performances being staged year-round, visitors are always sure to find a show that suits their theatrical taste. Furthermore, half-price discounted tickets are available at the TKTS centre on Broadway – so you don’t have to pay a fortune to see a fantastic show.

Avid shoppers will be thrilled with New York City’s shopping scene – one of the most prominent in the world. With Stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Bloomingdales and Macy’s, there’s something to keep every shopper smiling. And children – as well as the young at heart – will enjoy visiting the world famous toy store, FAO Schwarz. New York also plays host to countless annual festivals and events, such as the International Food Festival, the New York State Fair, New York Film Festival and the New York City Marathon, the world’s largest road race. So no matter what time of year you decide to visit, you’re sure to come across some seasonal excitement.

If you’re planning a trip to New York City, you’ll find a number of superb hotels – like the Jumeirah Essex House – which offer first-class accommodation. And if you stay at a hotel near Central Park New York, you’re guaranteed an experience which encompasses both the animated attractions and serene splendours of the city. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags – complete with a pair of walking shoes – and get ready to experience one of the most iconic cities in the world.

28 Essential Music Sites To Promote Your Music

28 Essential Music Sites To Promote Your Music

If you have good music, people will listen and buy your music. But they need to find your music. I’ve done all your homework below and give you the 28 Essential Music Sites To Promote Your Music which will increase your income.

The sites below are broken down into categories to help target your music exposure needs.

Artists Bare Essentials

1. GoDaddy.com – Every band or artist needs their own website URL. There is so much you can do with it (I will cover it in a future post) to compliment your marketing efforts that it is well worth the .99 a year. GoDaddy is the best company for URLs with great customer service and cheat prices. I have used this company numerous times.
2. BandZoogle.com – This is a website that have band/artist templates for your music. You do not have to know how to build websites. They have it all for you. You can even sell your own music on the site among other services.
3. Bravenet.com – This company offers many free services and premium services that can help you build your marketing efforts. Most importantly, they have many interactive tools you can add to your own site or add to your social networks. It has a FREE email list tool to start collecting your fans emails. This tool is invaluable and I will post about the importance of email lists in the future. I have used this company numerous times.
4. FanBridge.com – This is an artist-specific company that helps build your fan base with email list tools. There is a free service and premium service. Use the coupon code MARKSTONE for a free upgrade.

Getting Your Music On iTunes & Other Sites

1. Tunecore.com – This is the premiere site to get your music on iTunes, Amazon and other valuable sites. Tunecore has just merged services with Amazon and will now print your CDs and open up merch stores for your music. This service will start on July 1st. But for now, get your music on iTunes. Over 70% of people use iTunes for their digital downloads than other sites. I personally know unsigned bands that make over ,000 a month off iTunes alone. There is an annual fee for each album you download. But you get to keep 100% of your royalties while other sites take a percentage. You can also get 30% OFF your fee’s by using the code beheard30.

Social Networks

1. MySpace.com – This has been the mecca for all bands and artists. MySpace even has its own label called MySpace Records. They sign artists in all genres and they usually sign bands that create a big buzz on their site. Registration is free.
2. Purevolume.com – This site has better streaming features than MySpace (MS streams have ads and randomly don’t work). This site is free to register and includes all genres but mostly caters to rock bands. They actively scout good music on their site to feature on their front page. This site gets over 10,000 visitors a day. There are social networking features available as well.
3. Twitter.com – This is the latest social networking phenomenon. Fans can see what the band and each individual member are doing throughout the day. Direct fan-to-band interaction takes place which is HUGE in building a core fan base. This is free to register and is a must in any musicians marketing plan. I will post about Twitter and your music marketing plan soon.
4. iLike.com – This site helps announce any new songs, new shows, new blogs or new pictures that you post up. Anyone who has iTunes (which is about 70% of the music population) get automatic updates on their iTunes player if they have your music in their iTunes. iLike has a sidebar that you can download attaches to your iTunes. Once you register for iLike, tell your fans about the sidebar so they can stay up-to-date on your bands every move.
5. Lastfm.com – This is another site that intergrates with your iTunes player. When you open a free account and download the Last.fm Scrobbler, everything you play gets registered by Last.fm. They use all that data from everyone’s iTune players to give you top played lists and stats on your songs. This is a good tool to see what songs are most popular on your albums. You might think you know what song is your most popular but Last.fm will tell you what your fans listen to the most.
6. Facebook.com – This is largest social network site in the world (2nd in the U.S. behind MySpace). It is starting to improve its music applications so this is definitely a site that you need to register for.

Artist Press Kits

1. SonicBids.com – This site offers EPKs (electronic press kits) for artists but also helps “book and license your music,” according to their site. I have never used their services but I know it is very reputable in the music industry.
2. PowerPressKits.com – Again, I have never used this company but they offer free press kit building. They even have different templates for you to use.

Websites For Your Music Reviews

1. AbsolutePunk.net – This website caters to anything in the rock genre and will cover hip-hop/rap. The crowd here can be tough on artists but getting any exposure on this site helps. The staff is rather huge so it is easy to get one or more of them to respond to your emails. If you have the stomach, get your music reviewed on this site. Music industry people are on this site multiple times a day.
2. Pitchfork.com – This site is the mecca for indie/singer/songwriter music. The owner was even listed as one of the Top 200 most influential people by Time Magazine. Again, this crowd can be tough.
3. PunkNews.com – This site caters to the true punk crowd and, again, can be a tough crowd. If you’re a punk band and what street cred, get posted/reviewed on this site.
4. Stereogum.com – This site caters to the singer/songwriter/indie band crowd.
5. BrooklynVegan.com – This site caters to the NYC music fan. Covers more than music and even has a Sirius satellite radio show.
6. TheDailyChorus.com – A smaller blog that has a lot of music industry attention. This blog covers music mostly in the rock genre from hardcore, emo, indie, punk and “scene” music.
7. GlobalGrind.com – This caters to the hip-hop culture and is more of a social network for hip-hop artists and fans. There are unsigned hip-hop features.

Sell Your Merchandise Online

1. BigCartel.com – This is a very popular e-commerce site that will sell your music merchandise (T-shirts, etc.) on their site and handle all the payments for you. You simply collect the orders and ship them out. This gives you full control of the shipping process. You can create a store or use one of their templates.
2. DistrictLines.com – This site not only makes custom stores for some artists but they print your merchandise as well. They cater to bands in the rock genre but also have pop-culture icons as clients.

Companies That Make Your Merch (CDs, Tshirts, etc.)

1. Discmakers.com – This company is one of the kings in the CD duplication business. Their rates are very competitive and they also do a lot more than just CDs. You can get your Tshirts, stickers, buttons and a host of other things printed.
2. DistrictLines.com – They will not only make custom merch stores for you but they will also handle your printing needs.

Other Merchandise Companies

1. LoudBytes.com – This site allows you to purchase download cards, stickers or buttons with a code on each. This code can be redeemed on their site for your music. You can sell these items at shows without ordering physical CDs. You sell the cards to your fans and they will download your music off LoudBytes. They even have hangtags for your Tshirts. If you have physical CDs and want to sell a couple of B-sides, this is the most economical way to sell a song or two.
2. Dropcards.com – This is also a download card website that embeds a code into each card.

Music Discovery Blogs

1. Kings Of A&R.com – This site is heavily scouted by music industry people. This site covers all genres of music and if you feel like your music is good enough to be featured on the site, email Dean, the owner of the site.
2. TheDailyChorus.com – Another music discovery site that is scouted by the music industry. This site mainly covers music in the rock genre. The staff of this site is a lot bigger than KOAR so it’s easier to get the staffs attention.

I will explore many of these sites in greater detail to show you how you can improve your music marketing plan to obtain new fans which will increase your revenue.

New York Night Life

New York Night Life

New York Nightlife

New York (http://new-york.ixs.net ) is known as the city that never sleeps. Whether it’s live jazz, rock, comedy, or cabaret; or if it’s sweating on a dance floor, or just people-watching in a neighborhood pub, New York has plenty of choices for your evening’s entertainment. From fine dining to theatre, from poetry readings to all-night raves, NYC is the place to be.

The nightlife scene is still largely downtown. Home to Broadway, the Times Square is enjoying a renaissance, with American theme restaurants, bars and cinemas attracting a huge tourist crowd. The East Village, from 14th Street to Houston east of Broadway, is famous for its local bars that stay open late and its small live music clubs frequented by a young rock-and-roll set. Midtown, especially around Hell’s Kitchen, is developing a reputation. The Lower East Side, an up-and-coming neighbourhood that borders the East Village at Houston and stretches south to Chinatown at Canal, offers a similar nightlife scene and vibe. Classic jazz joints in the West Village and the Meatpacking District’s and Chelsea’s see-and-be-seen clubs are also alive at night. And across the East River, Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood has become the place for artists, hipsters, and rock-and-roll fans.

Night clubs, Bars & Lounges

There are clubs for almost every idiosyncratic taste. However, keep in mind that when you go is just as important as where you go because a club that was packed at 11 pm might empty out by midnight, and a bar that raged last night may be completely empty tonight.

Manhattan buzzes with nocturnal activity, from bustling neighbourhood bars to cocktail lounges and ultra hip nightclubs. SoHo with its chic nightclubs attracts artists, models and media types. The gay scene is centered around the bars of the West Village, which also offers a lively mix of jazz clubs. Gramercy, in the 20s on the east side, is the ‘new SoHo’ with velvet-rope cocktail lounges. Upmarket tastes are also catered for in the sophisticated lounges, clubs and cocktail bars in Midtown and the Upper East and Upper West Sides.

Hip bars include Max Fish, in Lower East Side, which fills with a young, T-shirt-and-jeans crowd and the newly remodelled Serena, in Chelsea, a subterranean lounge in the cool and legendary Chelsea Hotel. Double Happiness in Chinatown, draws a funky 20-something clientele. A more sophisticated lounge, the Campbell Apartment, Grand Central Station, Midtown, is hidden away in this busy rail terminal, serving top-class cocktails and first-rate Martinis. The refined, clubby bar in the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, Midtown West, is known for its literary origins. For classic New York, there is Chumley’s, or the White Horse Tavern in West Village.

Entrance fees to some of the smarter nightclubs can be pricey and is cash only. Most clubs charge a cover, which can range from Dollar 5 to Dollar 25 or more, depending on the venue and the night. Remember to dress properly, something that is easily accomplished like dressed in black. Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed public places in New York City, including restaurants and bars. Some bars have gardens or fully enclosed smoking rooms for those who wish to light up, but in most places you’ll have to step outside. The normal club closing time is 0400, although many venues are open all night and most of them do serve dinner. An ever-changing crop of ‘after-hours’ places offer entertainment until sunrise. The minimum drinking age is 21 and checking of photo ID is mandatory. The average price of a beer is US Dollar 5–7, while the average price of a cocktail is US Dollar 10. A tip of US Dollar 1–2 is expected per drink.

Jazz Clubs

The city is also home to numerous jazz clubs featuring performances of both the best American and international jazz musicians. All the greats made their names here, and young up-and-comers flock to the city for the chance to prove themselves. The Vanguard opened its doors in 1935 and is the archetypal Greenwich Village jazz club which has the right vibes and an excellent booking policy. Catch pianist Tommy Flanagan here for a perfect jazz night out. At Iridium top internationally known artists play six day runs. Minimum cover charge: Dollar 20.00.

Cabaret

Cabaret comes in many forms–great vocalists, impersonators, skits, stand-up comedy, reviews, parodies, one-act shows. New York’s leading comedy venues feature top-line professionals. Some of these comedy clubs include Caroline’s on Broadway, The Comedy Cellar, and Gotham Comedy Club, – dubbed the ‘best comedy club in Manhattan.’ Dangerfield’s which is owned by comedian Rodney Dangerfield has received rave reviews for 35 years.

Free Cultural Events

Amazingly there are also free cultural events such as Shakespeare in the Park performed by stars, under the stars, in Central Park. It has become a New York institution over time. For the entertainment of children there is a Children’s Theater: Paper Bag Players. For children ages 4 to 9, this group performs in the winter only and offers tales told in imaginative and original ways.

Broadway/Theater

Watching a movie or a show on Broadway in NYC is one of the most popular night time entertainments. See the likes of popular Broadway shows such as The Lion King, Wicked, Spamalot, Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray. But be sure to buy your Broadway show tickets early as like anything else in life, the good ones sell out quickly.

Restaurants

From the astronomically expensive to the inexpensive, from the enormous to the pocket-sized, from the snooty to the happy-to-serve, from haute cuisine to take-out food, restaurants in NYC are in abundance. Almost every cuisine in the world is well represented — from Afghan to Ethiopian to Vietnamese to Polish — as is almost every cooking style. Most of their kitchens are open till 2 am. Times Square, Ninth Avenue, SoHo, the East Village, Greenwich Village, and the Upper West Side are especially known for their restaurants. The better known, more expensive and more popular restaurants require reservations, especially on the weekends

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a weekend. Night life is active every night of the week as nobody in New York waits for the weekend. You can be assured most of the night clubs and other places of the like will be packed like the Saturday nights.

Anomaly is a group that saxophonist, Thomas Hutchings formed to showcase his music and musically talented friends. They play every 2nd and 4th Wednesday around 9:30pm at an East Village bar on 13th & 2nd Ave in NYC called Nightingale Lounge. The music is funky and jazzy and the high caliber of the musicians in the band and that come down to sit in is mind boggling. There are not many places you can go in New York and hear this level of instrumental musicianship for free anymore, so go there before they start charging a cover!

Visit Greenwich Village New York City and Enjoy

Visit Greenwich Village New York City and Enjoy

Greenwich Village New York City is one of the major places in the city that both residents and visitors go to make a day or evening of it. Although it has a reputation as an avant garde kind of place, it has lost some of its Bohemian feel in recent years.

Today, tourists visit Greenwich Village New York City and simply enjoy the neighborhood. If you want to go to this part of Manhattan, you will be visiting the area where the Beat Generation made their home. Among the famous residents who made Greenwich Village New York City home are the singer Bob Dylan.

The lower East Side and the Village exist in the same general area of Manhattan, the East Village east of Broadway and the village west of Broadway. It is not quite the Greenwich Village of old with its easy atmosphere, but it is still most interesting to visit.

The area caters to the adult crowd and many of the bars and clubs in this neighborhood range from cheap to quite expensive. As for food, you can find just about any food you would like from the street vendors or the many restaurants that are very common in this part of New York City.

Even though Greenwich Village New York City is not generally for children, you can take them to places that do not interact with the more adult parts of the neighborhood. One good place to go with children is Washington Square Park. And if you need a little alone time with your sweetheart, you can go there for a romantic getaway as well.

The area has an interesting history. Before European and American settlers showed up, the village was a large tobacco field tended by Native Americans. After Dutch settlers arrived, it was cleared of the crop and renamed Nordwyck.

After English settlers showed up, they forced the Dutch settlers to leave and renamed the area Grin’wich. At this time, Grin’Wich as a neighborhood was actually not part of New York City. When yellow fever swept through and wiped out a lot of population in lower Manhattan, many people moved to Grin’Wich because it had open spaces and clean air.

The history is not particularly significant when one thinks about what the village represented in the fifties to the seventies, but its twentieth-century Bohemian culture took root there as did other important parts of American history like the anti-Vietnam War movement. During this time, Greenwich Village New York City was home to a very unique culture and alternative lifestyles.

Many writers, musicians, poets and artists moved to the area for its ambiance and in search of their own fame. Businesses there were generally coffee shops and thrift shops, but they began to cater specifically to the arts crowd and made themselves accessible to that particular type of customer.

These days, the neighborhood has undergone many changes as compared to its Bohemian days. Of course, Greenwich Village New York City is still a very interesting place to go, but the borders are closer and the artsy feel and ambiance is largely absent. You can find certain areas, though, that still embody that.

Although it used to be that Spring Street was the demarcation for the Village, it is West 4th Street now. West 4th Street still has the flavor and feel of the original art scene in small areas.

This area is where you can still find some of the original art scene. In addition, this was a major epicenter of the homosexual movement about twenty years ago. The area today is a mix of straight and gay nightclubs and boutiques that supply alternative clothing popular to young people. The area is also sometimes called the New York City red light district.

West 4th Street also has the renowned street courts, training ground for many of the greatest street basketball players. The NBA and the And 1 Corporation used this area as a location for making street basketball films. The courts are across the street from the subway stop at West 4th Street and it is a popular place to stop and simply watch the athletes’ skill, especially during the summer months.

If you are planning to visit the Big Apple, be sure not to miss Greenwich Village New York City. Its uniqueness will make it a place that once you visit, you will always remember.

East Village, Calgary Renos Could Mean Big Opportunity

East Village, Calgary Renos Could Mean Big Opportunity

The East Village has long had a less than savoury reputation as the home of the homeless, drug dealers and prostitutes. This does not make it the first place that comes into one’s mind as a possible opportunity for real estate investment, but the master plan that the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) unveiled on September 16, 2009 could mean that this ravaged chunk of the city could see some new life.

Construction in the East Village has been going on for a few years now, with street realignment, wider pedestrian thoroughfares, and lighting installation. 12 blocks are currently under construction and more will undergo redevelopment in the future. However, CMLC’s plans for the area are even grander.

The master plan calls for six “character” areas, gateways at the 4th St. underpass and the northwest corner of the neighborhood, green space along the Bow River, including a riverside pathway, and a pedestrian walkway that runs right through the middle, from the intersection of 4th St. and 8th Ave. to the river. Commercial and residential developments are planned within this framework to create a revitalized live/work community and encourage Calgary’s up-and-coming residents to consider this place as home.

Other plans include work on St. Patrick’s Island with a new bridge and a swimming/skating pool, a new music centre design by the Cantos Music Foundation that will include the King Edward Hotel. There have been many concerns about how best to preserve the condemned heritage building, which were allayed when the Foundation moved in and started plans for revitalizing it. Now those plans are aligned with the CMLC’s bid to transform the entire neighborhood.

Hopes are high that the East Village will follow in the path of Eau Claire, once industrial land, now a thriving mix of condos, businesses, and the famous Eau Claire Market. The Market is home to unique shops and restaurants that draw people from all over Calgary as well as visitors to the city. If the East Village can capture the attention of consumers and businesspeople, chances are that its establishment as the newest live/work neighborhood in Calgary will be successful.

Time will definitely tell whether the latest attempt to reclaim the East Village will be successful. If it is, the people who invest in real estate first will be the winners. The CMLC plans to market the “new” East Village as “the newest oldest coolest warmest neighborhood”. If their plans succeed, the hope is that 11,500 people will call the East Village home by 2020.
